Buoyancy

Module 4: Lesson 2

Students will explore some of the physical principles that affect the work of diving scientists and astronauts in space, and how the underwater world can be used as a simulation for weightlessness. Students will develop and use a model to explain how neutral buoyancy is used underwater to simulate zero gravity in space.

Lesson Plan

Essential Question: How can astronauts simulate weightlessness by living and working at Aquarius Reef Base?

Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Explain Archimedes’ Principle and how it applies to working underwater
  • Develop and use a model to explain how neutral buoyancy is used underwater to simulate zero gravity in space
  • Understand the differences and similarities between the sea and space
